ELENA MAKRIDES. The Power Woman
To be a head in one of the leading companies in fiduciary services sector, a happy mother of four children and a beloved wife. Such an achievement can be reached only by a highly organised, target-minded, powerful woman who is able to make important decisions with confidence and take full responsibility for those decisions.
Elena is the owner and managing director of VestaCorp Limited, a company that has firmly established its niche in the fiduciary services sector. Her company is distinguished by team cohesion, speed of work and the highest professional standards in all aspects of their work.
Elena, what do you think is the secret of success?
I think that everyone understands success in a different way. For some, success is money. For others, it is fame. Still others find their success by conquering the top of Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. For me, success, in the first place, is the achievement of a set of goals. There is no secret in that. Only hard work and dedication can lead someone to the desired results. Of course, it is very difficult to achieve results alone. All great projects have always been done by a team of people. I am happy to work side-by-side with my team of professionals, which I carefully selected.
Tell us about your first steps in your career.
I started working in my field at the end of 1998, with the law firm Patrikios Pavlou & Co. There, I learned not to be afraid to handle any case and to bring every case to its end. In 2003, I got a job at Abacus Limited, a former subsidiary of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where I learned to work to the highest standards; standards with no compromise. In early 2009, I opened my first company, which was engaged in the provision of fiduciary services. This company still operates under the license of the Cyprus Bar Association. In February 2017, VestaCorp Limited was opened and successfully received a license from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, becoming the head of our group of companies that were re-branded.
So, you are almost 20 years in this business?
Well, it seems so. During all of this time, there have been a lot of changes in our sector, both in the legislation and in terms of the requirements of the regulators. Still, we always keep our hands on the pulse of our industry. We attend seminars, upgrade our qualifications, discuss innovations in the forums and adapt ourselves to the constantly changing business environment around us.
Is it difficult to constantly change something in your work?
In fact, changes are part of the business processes. If you do not change anything, do not improve, then stagnation will occur. You need to move forward. I very much like the phrase: “Only changes are unchanged in our world”.
And what about your personal life?
Well, I have also had several changes in my personal life: Moving to Cyprus, learning a new language, ending an unsuccessful marriage and, of course, the struggle for survival with three children. I moved so many times, from one apartment to another, that I cannot even count. There was a time when I did not know if I would have enough money to pay for rent or buy food.
How did you cope with all the difficulties in your life?
I’m an optimist. I had no time to sit and complain. I had to do things…and I was doing things until I was satisfied with the result. Today, our company is growing, I’m married to a wonderful man and we have a daughter in common. Together with my husband, we have six children in total and all of them are best friends with each other. My children are my greatest achievement.
Thank you for your time and frankness, Elena. We wish you continued success in conquering new heights!
